About: "The Potato Dish"
I found this treasure on a very crowded pantry shelf at an eclectic estate sale near my home in July 2017. I just could not pass it up. I mean, seriously could any of YOU pass up A Potato Dish? Maybe so, perhaps you are stronger than me, But I could not. With all the seriousness of life, I needed the break. So I attended this estate sale with my good friend Gina. The Potato Dish called out to me and took it home. Inside of it, I found three tiny silver spoons (I still don't know what they are for) and a pile of those little bar picks in it - you know the little sword kind and some very OLD Tooth Picks? And even though I googled it, I still cannot figure out what this Potato Dish is for. Regardless, It must have Some Purpose - if only to delight you. So Now the Potato Dish sits on my dining room table as it no doubt contains 'scoops' of whimsy. And that always seems the basis of a good tale...
By the way, if you know what this potato dish is used for, I would love to know! Send your comments to me below:
Today I have been working on my Own Website. I have not yet migrated to eBay, Etsy or Amazon Handmade, though I have been approved for a "Store" There. I have my reasons. I'm not own on these Super Sellers, I am just not sure they are right for me at this stage of this little effort. These are HUGE Sellers, and a misstep as a vendor can and will get you banned for LIFE. As in many things in life, timing is everything. I respectfully ask you to consider a different view:
First, the next time you see a hand made product or run across a clearly home-spun website and are quick to comment, please stop for a moment and imagine yourself in THEIR Shoes as the proprietor. Please be kind because true creation is very hard to do. Few of us start out knowing how to do anything related to this industry and we are constantly evolving and learning. In the process, we put our heart and soul what we make. You will never see the hours we put into our crafts behind the scenes. Sometimes, as in the case of my own product, a outwardly simple form is actually quite complex, e.g., each "Napkin Necklace" I make has over 20 carefully selected components. Imagine that!
Please take the time to support Hand-Crafted enterprises by attending local shows that offer hand-made items, or shop from the proprietors' website if they have one. The next time you pass by a display and think "I really like that" or "Wow how Clever, great idea", Please Stop and take a second look. Talk to the proprietor, listen to their story. Ask how they got started and about their creative process. You may come to realize how important your purchase and support is to these people. And I think that might surprise and delight you.
I am afraid without your support soon individual creativity and true crafted and original items will be lost between the cracks of Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Facebook or other mass commerce. Worse yet, hard-won creativity will be copied and devalued on a mass market scale by these super sellers. That would be a very sad loss to this world.
Thank you for reading this post. More can be found at About:
Update 2018: Please know that we have been solicited to sell our products on Amazon Handmade, Etsy, and more, but have politely declined. Simply put, engaging with these super sellers Costs a pile of money and eat up your time, all while making the sellers do all of the work. We just can't do it all. Honestly, we would rather spend our time creating new high quality styles; with the aim that you, our customer, will understand we are just a couple of old people with physical and mental limits that put workmanship above the the lure of mass marketeer mania
So today it's about Spiders.
Odd because they scare me to death. But alas, I saw this COOL Post about Jewelled Spiders and here I am, between making Napkin Necklaces - I am making Spiders.
Light bulb Spiders.
Jeweled Spiders - to be used various ways
Even a Spider Ring
Now I have an idea for a COOL Costume for Halloween - if only to hand out candy to the kids that come to my doorstep.
Spiders today. Simply Delightful.
In the meantime, I am busy making Napkin Necklaces - www.thenapkinnecklace.com for people to enjoy. Now if I can just make a Spider one...
This is a photo of the actual note left to me on "The back of a napkin" the morning as I headed out to meet a group of total strangers. I arranged for feedback about idea for an improved hands-free napkin keeper.
Honestly, standing in front of a group of strangers was terrifying. Since my accident in 2001 I pretty much had stayed at home, out of visibility of the public. Engaging strangers was SO Far out of my comfort zone.
Encouraged by that initial feedback I decided to press on.
I am happy to say that just one fast paced year later and I have taken my idea from "The back of a napkin" to a deliverable. On the way, I have met dozens of new people and talked with them in detail about experiences of starting up a business project. What stood out was the "Shared common experience" of noting our ideas on whatever was available at the time and in so many cases, it seems many people have "back of a napkin' dreams.
Today I am in the midst of 'relaunching' my entire product line. With my 2017 craft show schedule starting, I am excited about what the future might bring.
Your turn now to share. Perhaps you recall that "Idea?" Maybe it was the lunch marketing flow-chart. Or just a fleeting thought jotted down on the way out of a coffee shop.
Be fearless and share either by posting your experiences on www.facebook.com/thenapkinnecklace or by sending me a brief note using below. You never know what YOU Might inspire, for it seems the humble Napkin holds a special place in our dreams, and in our hearts.
All the best and thank you for your support.
